Cococucumber's cult-favorite sci-fi RPG is getting the sequel treatment, and it is arriving sooner than anyone expected. Echo Generation 2 was the standout reveal at Wednesday's ID@Xbox Spring Showcase, complete with a release date trailer that confirmed a May 27 launch on Steam, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox Cloud Gaming, and — crucially — day one on Xbox Game Pass.
The original Echo Generation earned a devoted following for its voxel-art Stranger Things vibes and surprisingly deep turn-based combat. The sequel takes the formula in a wildly different direction — swapping the small-town 90s setting for a full-blown cosmic odyssey that spans alien worlds and alternate dimensions.
From Suburban Mystery to Galactic Deckbuilder
Players take up the mantle of Jack, an ex-special ops operative turned ordinary family man, who gets whisked away across the galaxy during what should have been a routine vacation. What begins as a desperate bid to find a way home quickly spirals into something much larger, as Jack uncovers a growing cosmic threat that ties directly into the events of the first game.
The biggest mechanical addition is the deckbuilding layer. Throughout the journey, players collect cards that grant powerful abilities in battle, adding a strategic deck-construction element on top of the series' signature turn-based combat. It is a natural evolution that should give the moment-to-moment gameplay a lot more variety and replayability.
Six Characters, Six Playstyles
Echo Generation 2 features six distinct playable characters, each with their own unique abilities, card pools, and playstyles. Players can form a party of three for the game's Championship battles, which encourages experimentation and rewards players who explore different team compositions. The roster ranges from heavy hitters to support specialists, and the interplay between card decks and character abilities looks like it could get seriously deep.
A Free Demo Is Live Now
If you want to get an early taste, a limited-time demo is currently available on both Steam and Xbox Series X|S. It is a smart move from Cococucumber — the original's charm was the kind of thing you had to experience firsthand, and giving players a hands-on look before launch could do wonders for building word-of-mouth.
Echo Generation 2 launches May 27 on Steam, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox on PC, and Xbox Cloud Gaming. It supports Xbox Play Anywhere and arrives day one on Xbox Game Pass.
