Tomodachi Life hasn't had a mainline entry since the 3DS game launched internationally in 2014. That's twelve years of waiting for fans who fell in love with the quirky social simulation series — and the wait is nearly over. Tomodachi Life: Living the Dream launches for Nintendo Switch on April 16, 2026, bringing a full modernization of the Mii island formula while adding new features that weren't possible on older hardware.
A free demo — Tomodachi Life: Living the Dream - Welcome Edition — is already live on the Nintendo eShop, and any progress made in the demo carries over to the full game upon purchase.
What Living the Dream Is
Like its predecessors, Living the Dream is a social simulation game about Mii characters living on a tropical island. You populate the island with Miis based on yourself, your friends, celebrities, or entirely original creations — then watch them fall in love, argue, pursue careers, and develop distinct personalities over time. The appeal has always been in the emergent comedy and drama that springs from these little digital people.
The game supports up to 70 Miis on a single island at once. More than one Mii can now choose to share a home, which can be expanded to accommodate up to eight residents — a significant shift from the single-occupancy housing of the original games.
One of the most notable additions in Living the Dream is player agency. In previous Tomodachi games, relationship dynamics largely played out through random chance — Miis would develop feelings for each other on their own, and players could only nudge things along. Living the Dream introduces the ability to directly control interactions between Miis, giving players much more influence over who gets along with whom and how those relationships develop.
Island Customization and New Activities
Living the Dream introduces full island layout customization — players can change the shape and layout of the island itself, not just decorate it. This is a meaningful new creative layer that gives the simulation a more personal feel.
Mii part-time jobs have been added as an activity, giving your island residents something to do beyond eating food you've gifted them and expressing opinions about tomatoes. The game's latest trailer specifically highlighted these jobs as a key new activity, with Miis taking on a range of roles that generate comedy and occasional drama.
LGBTQ+ Miis and Expanded Character Options
Living the Dream finally introduces same-sex relationships for Miis — a long-requested feature that was absent from previous entries and was the subject of significant controversy around Tomodachi Life on 3DS. Gay, bisexual, non-binary, and aromantic Mii options are all present in the new game.
Hair customization has also been expanded significantly. The hairstyle selector is now split into front and back styles (allowing for more combinations), with a dedicated "Sets" category for traditional non-separated styles and new additions. Hair streaks are also included as a customization option.
Nintendo Switch 2 Enhancements
For players on Nintendo Switch 2, Living the Dream runs natively at 1080p in handheld mode and loads considerably faster than on the original Switch. The content is identical across both platforms — Switch 2 players get the same game with better performance. GameChat is also supported on Switch 2, letting players share their island life with friends online while playing.
