HoYoverse's hit gacha RPG reaches a major milestone this week as Honkai: Star Rail launches its Version 4.2 update, titled "So Laughed the Masses," just days ahead of the game's third anniversary on April 26. The update, which went live across all platforms on April 22, brings three new playable characters, a fresh Trailblaze Mission, new explorable areas in Planarcadia, and one of the most generous reward hauls in the game's history.
The headline addition is Silver Wolf Lv.999, a dramatically powered-up version of the fan-favorite hacker character. Having achieved level 999 within the Simulated Universe, Silver Wolf evolves into what HoYoverse calls a "Godmode Player," wielding entirely new abilities that reflect her mastery of the game's systems. She is joined by Evanescia, a mysterious new character tied to the Planarcadia storyline, and the Elation Trailblazer, a new path for the protagonist that leans into the Aeon of Joy.
For the third-anniversary celebration, HoYoverse is handing out 30 free Special Star Rail Passes over the course of Version 4.2, alongside a Golden Companion Spirit selector that grants every player a free 5-star character of their choice. Existing characters also benefit from the update: Novaflare enhancements arrive for Firefly, Huohuo, Seele, and Welt, giving each a meaningful power boost and new combat options that should shake up team compositions in both the Forgotten Hall and Pure Fiction endgame modes.
Planarcadia and the Fool's Marionette Theater
The new Trailblaze Mission picks up near the peak of the Penacony spire, where players approach the Phantasmoon and encounter the Fool, a figure who weaves the hearts of men into a marionette theater within her palms. The storyline promises to unravel deeper truths about the nature of Penacony and the Aeons' influence, with fully voiced cutscenes and branching dialogue choices that keep players engaged for hours.
New maps open up across Planarcadia, a realm where surreal architecture meets shifting realities. HoYoverse has packed these zones with hidden puzzles, Warp Trotter encounters, and lore-rich environmental storytelling that rewards thorough exploration. Multiple Indelible Coterie reruns are also available for players who missed previous event content.
